How to Check a Photo's Shooting Date and Camera Info (EXIF)
2026-11-08
How to read a photo's shooting date, camera model, shutter speed, aperture and location data stored in its EXIF information.
What EXIF information is
EXIF is shooting information saved inside a photo file. It can include the camera model, the date taken, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length and location (GPS).
Steps
1. Add a JPG, PNG or WebP photo to the EXIF viewer. One photo at a time, up to 100MB.
2. Check "Preview of the selected photo" to make sure it is the right one.
3. Read the groups "Camera", "Shooting settings", "Date and time", "Location (GPS)", "People and rights" and "Image".
4. Only items that are actually in the photo are shown, so a missing item means the photo does not contain it.
When the date is missing
A photo without EXIF data shows the note "This photo has no EXIF data." Photos that went through a messenger or social app may have had their information removed by that service. The file's modified date can also differ from the date it was taken.
Things to watch
- Location, artist and camera serial number are highlighted. Remove them with the EXIF remover before you publish the photo.
- No map is drawn, because that would send coordinates to an outside server. Coordinates are shown as numbers only.
- HEIC photos cannot be opened, so convert them to JPG first. The converted file does not keep the original EXIF.
