How to Fit Instagram Feed Photos to Square and 4:5 Sizes
2026-11-08
How to fit a photo to the Instagram feed square (1080×1080) and portrait 4:5 (1080×1350) sizes, with the difference between cropping and padding.
Two common feed sizes
The Instagram feed often uses a 1080×1080 square and a 4:5 portrait at 1080×1350. Portrait photos take up more of the screen and stand out more.
Steps
1. Add your photo to the Social Media Image Sizer.
2. Under "Size", choose "Feed square" or "Feed portrait (4:5)".
3. Move the "Crop to fill" area so the subject sits in the middle. To keep the whole photo, choose "Fit with padding" and pick a padding color.
4. Press "Save this size" to download the file.
Both sizes at once
To upload both, tick the two sizes under "Several sizes at once" and download the ZIP. Crop to fill is centered on the photo, so if the subject is off-center, save each size separately.
Things to watch
- Instagram can re-compress uploads, so a larger original gives a sharper result.
- Platform specs and layout can change. Check the latest guidance before you post.
