Remove a White Background and Make a Transparent PNG
2026-11-08
A step-by-step guide to removing a background by clicking its color, adjusting tolerance and edge softness, then saving a transparent PNG. Photos never leave your browser.
What a background cut-out is, and which images suit it
A cut-out removes the background so only the subject remains. It works best when the background is close to one color, such as a logo on white or a product shot on a plain backdrop.
This tool is not AI. It does not find the outline of a person or object for you. You click the background color, and similar pixels become transparent. Heavy shadows or gradients may not clear cleanly.
Steps
1. Open the background remover and add your image. The color at the top-left corner is picked first as the color to remove.
2. Click the background in the checkerboard preview. The color under your click becomes the color to remove, and the result updates at once.
3. Choose "Connected background only" to remove only the same color connected to the spot you clicked. The same color inside the subject, such as white inside a letter, stays.
4. If background remains, raise the tolerance. If the subject starts to disappear, lower it. The default is 12%.
5. If the edges look jagged, raise "Edge softness" a little. The default is 6%.
6. Choose PNG or WebP and press "Save transparent image".
JPG cannot keep transparency
Only PNG and WebP can hold transparent pixels. Saving as JPG fills those areas, so save cut-outs as PNG or WebP. The saved image keeps the original size.
When it does not clear well
- If there is a shadow or gradient, click another spot and try again.
- A JPG can leave compression speckles in the background, so you may need a slightly higher tolerance.
- Fine outlines such as hair are hard to cut out cleanly.
- To remove the same color inside the subject too, choose "Every matching pixel". That also removes matching areas inside the subject.
