How to Straighten a Sideways Photo (Rotate and Flip)
2026-11-08
How to turn a sideways photo upright in 90° steps, why phone photos sometimes look sideways, and how to flip and save.
Why a photo can look sideways
A phone photo taken upright stores its shooting direction along with the image. Software that ignores that information can show it sideways. This tool applies the shooting direction when you add the photo, so it opens upright.
Steps to straighten it
1. Add the photo to the crop and rotate tool.
2. If it is still not upright, press "Rotate left 90°" or "Rotate right 90°".
3. If it looks mirrored, press "Flip horizontal" or "Flip vertical".
4. When it looks right, press "Crop and save". If the crop area still covers the whole photo, only the rotation and flips are saved.
If you turned it the wrong way
Press "Reset" to return to the original state. Rotation works in 90° steps, so this tool cannot fine-tune a slightly tilted photo.
Things to watch
- The saved file name gets a -edited suffix after the original name.
- Saving as JPG fills transparent areas with white. To keep transparency, save as PNG or WebP.
